WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies and other similar technologies, such as local shared objects, Flash cookies or pixels, are tools used by web servers to store and retrieve information about their visitors and to ensure that the website functions correctly.

These technologies allow the web server to remember certain information relating to the user, such as their preferences for viewing pages on that server, username and password, products they are most interested in, etc.

COOKIES SUBJECT TO REGULATIONS AND EXEMPT COOKIES

Under the EU Directive, cookies requiring the user's informed consent include analytics, advertising and affiliate cookies. Technical cookies, and those necessary for the website to function or to provide services expressly requested by the user, are exempt.

WHAT TYPES OF COOKIES ARE THERE?

BY PURPOSE

  • Technical and functional cookies: These enable users to navigate a website, platform or application and use the various options or services available, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying a session, accessing restricted areas, remembering items in an order, completing the purchase process, registering for or participating in an event, using security features while browsing, storing content for video or audio playback, or sharing content via social networks. They include personalisation cookies, which allow users to access a service with certain general features predefined according to criteria stored on the user's device, such as language, browser type or regional settings.

  • Analytics cookies: These allow the party responsible for them to monitor and analyse users' behaviour on the websites to which they are linked. The information collected is used to measure activity on websites, applications or platforms and to compile browsing profiles, with a view to making improvements based on analysis of how users use the service.

  • Advertising cookies: These enable the advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, application or platform to be managed as effectively as possible, based on criteria such as the content displayed or the frequency with which adverts are shown.

  • Behavioural advertising cookies: These collect information about users' personal preferences and choices (retargeting) to enable advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, application or platform to be managed as effectively as possible. Further info at:
http://www.lssi.gob.es/Paginas/politica-cookies.aspx and the Spanish Data Protection Agency's Guide to the Use of Cookies.

  • Social media cookies: These are set by social media platforms on services to allow users to share content with friends and networks. Social media platforms can track users' online activity outside the Services. This may affect the content and messages users see on other services they visit.

  • Affiliate cookies: These track visits originating from other websites with which the website has an affiliate agreement (affiliate companies).

  • Security cookies: These store encrypted information to prevent the data they contain from being vulnerable to malicious attacks by third parties. They are only used on HTTPS connections.

BY OWNERSHIP

  • First-party cookies: These are sent to the user's device from a device or domain managed by the publisher itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.

  • Third-party cookies: These are sent to the user's device from a device or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity which processes the data obtained through the cookies.

BY RETENTION PERIOD

  • Session cookies: These are designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website.

  • Persistent cookies: These store data on the user's device, where it can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the party responsible for the cookie, ranging from a few minutes to several years.
